Male Breast Reshaping (Gynecomastia) | Bethesda MD, Washington DC, VirginiaEnlargement of the male chest (gynecomastia) is a common, but often infrequently discussed problem. It can occur in up to 60% of males. It is very common in male patients that have undergone significant weight loss. This can be a source of embarrassment and insecurity for many men. If you feel self-conscious about taking off your shirt at the beach or during the summer, then male breast reshaping may be appropriate for you. Male breast enlargement is often a normal physical finding, but may be due to certain underlying medical conditions. There are several techniques to help reduce the size of your chest. The choice of procedure will depend on the amount of fat present in the chest, the degree of breast glandular tissue, and the amount of excess skin present. During your consultation, Dr. Michaels will comprehensively examine your chest and a treatment plan will be tailored do your goals and needs. If your chest enlargement is due to excessive fatty tissue alone, you may benefit from liposuction. If you have glandular breast tissue present as well, a small incision may be required around your areola to remove this tissue. If you have an enlarged areola or a small amount of excessive skin, a circumferential incision may be made around the areola to reduce its size and remove excess skin. If you have undergone significant weight loss you may have significant excess skin which will require an elliptical excision of skin from the base of the chest and repositioning of your nipple and areola.
