Breast Reconstruction | Bethesda MD, Washington DC, Virginia

The female breast is one of the defining features of being a woman. If you or a loved-one has had or requires a mastectomy (removal of the breast) or partial mastectomy, there are many options for breast reconstruction. Our goal is to restore a natural-looking breast.

During your consultation, Dr. Michaels will take a full medical history and listen to your goals for reconstruction with both patience and compassion. Important considerations to take into account will be the timing of the reconstruction with respect to your mastectomy and also the type of reconstruction you desire, either implant reconstruction or autologous (your body's own) tissue.

The timing of surgery will depend on several factors including your overall medical condition, the need for adjuvant therapy (radiation or chemotherapy), and your individual preference. It is common to perform breast reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy so you can awake from your procedure with a newly reconstructed breast. Dr. Michaels will work closely with both your oncologist and breast surgeon to help determine the optimal timing.

The different types of reconstruction include implant reconstruction, autologous reconstruction, or a combination of the above two. Dr. Michaels will provide you with all the information necessary to make an informed decision based on your unique goals for reconstruction.

Three months following your procedure, a nipple can be reconstructed and an areola tattooed to further enhance your result. You may also require a symmetry procedure on the opposite breast (breast augmentation or breast lift) to match the size and proportions of the reconstructed breast.
