Circumferential Body LiftCongratulations on your weight loss achievement. If you have undergone significant weight loss, you may have several areas with excess skin that you would like corrected. A circumferential body lift is the main procedure used to recontour your abdomen, lateral thighs and buttock regions. The term circumferential body lift can often be confusing as this procedure is sometimes referred to as a lower body lift or belt lipectomy. It is important for you to know that although these terms are often used interchangeably, they are not all the same and you will have different results depending on the procedure and your plastic surgeon. Dr. Michaels is an expert in body contouring after weight loss having completed one of the few fellowships dedicated to this specialized area of plastic surgery. A circumferential body lift, involves a circumferential excision to improve the contour of the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. In some patients, this can cause a loss of buttock projection with a "flattened" appearance. In these patients, Dr. Michaels will selectively preserve the buttock tissue that is discarded by most plastic surgeons and use this tissue to maintain and enhance your buttock projection. This is also known as gluteal or buttock autoaugmentation. During your consultation, Dr. Michaels will carefully listen to your goals for body contouring and tailor a treatment plan that will allow you to achieve your goals. Many patients choose to have their abdomen, lateral thighs and buttocks corrected during one procedure, but this procedure can also be performed in two stages. The first stage is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and the second stage is a lateral thigh lift and buttock lift. The incisions from both procedures are merged leaving a circumferential incision line.
